Vaping

The laws governing vaping in Spain, Portugal, Greece, and other countries

Travellers should be advised that while the UK government has announced new limits on the sale and purchase of vapes within its borders, other nations are also implementing more stringent legislation. Understanding the regulations could have a significant impact on this year’s summer vacation, since some nations impose severe financial penalties and some even impose jail time.

The store Haypp’s resident vape expert, Markus Lindblad, has shared all the information you need to know about vaping in some of the most popular vacation spots in the UK.
Turkey
Although not strictly prohibited, the selling of vapes is illegal in Turkey since no vape kits or e-liquids have been granted a licence. You can, however, use any vapes you brought with you without worrying about being hurt. Turkey forbids the indoor use of vape devices as well.

Spain
There are already some places in Spain where smoking is prohibited on beaches. In 2023, the Balearic Islands designated 28 of their beaches as smoke-free zones, and all 10 beaches in Barcelona forbade smoking and vaping as well. Anyone found to be in violation of the regulations, including British vacationers, may be fined up to 2,000 euros. A new anti-smoking policy that restricts where individuals can smoke, raises tobacco costs, and targets vaping has been passed in Spain.
France
The single-use e-cigarette prohibition was approved by the French parliament in a unanimous vote. The law still needs to be approved by the government and supported by the EU. The government stated that it anticipates the prohibition will take effect by September 2024 if all parties pass the measure.

Portugal
Portugal regulates vaping in line with the EU Tobacco Products Directive and treats it in the same manner as smoking. All public enclosed areas, bars, restaurants, and clubs are prohibited from smoking, and violators risk fines of up to 750 euros.
Italy
In Italy, it is permissible to purchase and use vaporizers. Veneto and Sardinia are smoke-free regions, and they are prohibited in enclosed areas. Fines for infractions range from € 27.50 to € 550.

Greece
In Greece, disposable vaporizers are still allowed. There are no legal restrictions on their use in public areas, and you can buy them without a prescription. But there are some rules you should know about, such the maximum amount of nicotine allowed and the dimensions of the e-liquid cartridges.
USA
The US has differing regulations regarding vaping; some states forbid vaping anywhere smoking is forbidden, while others have no laws at all. For instance, vaping is permitted in bars in certain places, like Miami, but not in Florida restaurants. In California, using e-cigarettes is not permitted in many public areas, such as restaurants and bars, or in the workplace. State-specific vaping fines range from $50 to $500.

Australia
Australia is the tightest nation of them all. In Australia, vaping is prohibited for all vapers, and using one can result in a two-year prison sentence as well as fines of about £24,000. Therefore, if you’re going to Australia this summer, leave the vapes at home!

Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, Cabo Verde, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Gambia, India, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Laos, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Syria, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Uruguay, Vanuatu, and Venezuela are all on the list of nations that have outlawed disposable vaporizers.
