more regulation of vaping products is demanded

The negative effects of vaping, such as seizures, nicotine poisoning, and problems with brain development, worry AMA members.

The AMA Federal Council has taken action in response to member concerns about the health dangers of vaping.

Federal Council passed a motion during its meeting earlier this month calling for tougher regulatory steps to stop the spread of recreational non-nicotine vaping devices, including but not limited to:

A targeted federal response to track and take action on illegal advertising and promotion of vaping products, especially online and on social media, includes the implementation of regulations for vaping products that are similar to those for tobacco products, such as health warnings, better labelling, plain packaging, and tobacco licences.
Improved state and territorial regulation enforcement will aid in preventing unlawful vape sales both online and in storefronts.
This motion contributes to the AMA’s position and ongoing lobbying on all vaping products by clarifying the organization’s position on non-nicotine vaping goods. In our response to the Therapeutic Goods Administration’s Consultation on the proposed revisions to the regulation of nicotine vaping devices, it will expand on the AMA’s current position on the medical model for such products.

It is permitted to sell non-nicotine vaping products to customers over the age of 18 both offline and online. But a lot of these goods do contain nicotine, tricking consumers into consuming an addictive substance. Despite current regulations, it is simple for anyone under the age of 18 to buy both nicotine- and non-nicotine-containing vaping items illegally.

Children are clearly the target market for vaping products, which come in a wide range of flavours like fruit, lollipop, and dessert flavours and have bright, colourful packaging that can imitate famous juice boxes or candies.

Seizures, nicotine poisoning and related problems with young people‘s brain development, E-cigarette or Vaping Associated Lung Injury (EVALI), burns, cough, dizziness, and nausea are only a few of the acute health impacts of vaping products that are known.

The Australian Poisons Information Centre has received more calls about vaping, most of which were about youngsters. There is proof that vaping acts as a gateway to smoking by increasing the likelihood of starting traditional smoking by three times.

The AMA will continue to promote this cause to stop the use of dangerous vaping goods, which is spreading quickly.
